What is an NVQ?

A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) is a work-based qualification that recognizes the skills and knowledge a person needs to do a job. These qualifications are based on national occupational standards and are designed to reflect the candidate’s abilities in a real working environment.

NVQs are available at different levels, from Level 1 for basic work activities to Level 8 for senior management. They cover a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, construction, business, and many more.

NVQ Levels and Typical Duration

NVQ Level Typical Duration Equivalent To
Level 1 3-6 months GCSEs grades D-G
Level 2 6-12 months GCSEs grades A*-C
Level 3 12-18 months A-levels
Level 4 18-24 months Foundation degree
Level 5 24-36 months Higher diploma
Level 6 36-48 months Bachelor’s degree

Note: These durations are approximate and can vary depending on the individual’s experience, the specific NVQ, and whether it’s studied full-time or part-time alongside work.
